Rosalyn Kahn
Los Angeles City College, Santa Monica College, & Rio Hondo College

For over 13 years, I have been a professor of speech, focusing on public speaking, English as a second language, and interpersonal communication at Los Angeles City College, Santa Monica College, and Rio Hondo College. Additionally, I am teaching two high school outreach classes in Highland Park and El Monte respectively.

For the last two years, I have served as the part-time faculty representative for the speech department and am an alternate for the communication department at Santa Monica College. As a service learning program director, I am quite visible on my campus. Many people recognize me and respond to my friendly, outgoing personality. I have recently begun to get involved with the forensics program, which has expanded my influence over a wide range of people across the state, and I actively support the local theatre department.

I have a wonderfully supportive spouse who is a mail carrier and union activist. We often join forces at union halls, phone banks, and labor rallies.

Having earned a BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara and MA from California State Northridge, I find community colleges are the place where I feel most at home.

Viewed by my colleagues and peers as a conscientious, respectable, and driven individual, I am committed to supporting the California Community Colleges and educating our students. I strongly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn and I frequently push my students to become involved in their campus and community.

I believe that one’s future depends on more than just a degree and I strive to show my students the value of education as a positive force for change in their lives. As such, I want to help them improve their skills and be highly successful. My students rave about the value of attending forensics competitions, volunteering in their communities, or attending plays on campus. Many of my students have stated that I am “the first teacher who really cared.”

I have been a proud member of FACCC since my early days working in the LA District. I have served on the FACCC Membership Committee for the last seven years and served for one year on the Part-Time Faculty Committee. Outside of teaching, my proudest accomplishment was the recognition I received as the recipient of FACCC’s Margaret Quan Part-Time Advocate of the Year Award for my work on a ballot measure to secure funding for our colleges.

I got involved in FACCC because I appreciate the voice, commitment, and validation they give to part- as well as full-time faculty members. I truly feel they are my voice in Sacramento as I continue the work in the classroom.

I want to thank all the people at FACCC who have helped me and all our faculty members.
