PRESS RELEASE: Legislature Unanimously Approves FACCC-Sponsored Accreditation Bill
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California State Legislature unanimously passed FACCC-sponsored AB 404 (Chiu), which improves the communication between the California Community Colleges and the federal government on the evaluation and recognition process of regional accrediting agencies. AB 404 will now be submitted to the Governor for signature.
“FACCC applauds Assemblymember Chiu for his efforts to strengthen our colleges. AB 404 will provide the U.S. Department of Education with an honest appraisal of how the regional accreditor for California Community Colleges is complying with federal standards,” said Jonathan Lightman, FACCC Executive Director. “This will be critical as we move forward with the recent recommendations of the Accreditation Task Force. We urge Governor Brown to sign this important legislation into law.”
The California Community College (CCC) system is currently accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). The Chancellor’s Task Force on Accreditation released a report on August 28 recommending that the CCC Board of Governors explore options for an alternative accreditor.
