PRESS RELEASE: Governor Signs FACCC-Sponsored Accreditation Bill
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Governor Edmund G “Jerry” Brown, Jr. has signed FACCC-sponsored AB 404 (Chiu). AB 404 improves the communication between the California Community Colleges and the federal government on the evaluation and recognition process of regional accrediting agencies.
“FACCC applauds Assemblymember Chiu for his efforts to strengthen our colleges. AB 404 will provide the U.S. Department of Education with an honest appraisal of how the regional accreditor for California Community Colleges is complying with federal standards,” said Jonathan Lightman, FACCC Executive Director. “This will be critical as we move forward with the recent recommendations of the Accreditation Task Force. We thank Governor Brown for signing this important legislation into law.”
The California Community College (CCC) system is currently accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). The Chancellor’s Task Force on Accreditation released a report on August 28 recommending that the CCC Board of Governors explore options for an alternative accreditor.
