Richard Hansen Candidate Statement: The next few years offer unique opportunities and present significant challenges to community college faculty. Passage of the Community College Initiative, confrontation with critics of our policy of open access, defense of medical and retirement benefits, and promotion of faculty values as a guide to an otherwise rudderless system, are all issues demanding FACCC leadership. SB 361’s declaration of victory over the nagging problem of equalized funding opens the door for new initiatives to increase the number of full-time faculty positions and to bring part-time faculty parity in both salary and benefits. It is time for an aggressive campaign on both of these fronts. We should play to win, but we will have to be smart, and we will have to work together, if we want to succeed. A powerful defense of FACCC’s achievements and an aggressive offense on new initiatives requires experienced leadership. This is why I have chosen to run for an officer position, FACCC Secretary. I believe the next few years will be key to greater faculty influence in the state.
