Alicia Wang Candidate Statement: My name is Alicia Wang, and I am a full-time instructor in the E.S.L. department at San Francisco City College. I have served the college in many capacities over the past 30 years: as President of the Faculty Senate of the Centers Division; as member of the Executive Board and Bargaining Team, and as the Political Director of A.F.T. 2121; as the Faculty Advisor to the City College Young Democrats as well as the Chinatown North Beach Campus Associated Student Council. I have been particularly active in organizing our faculty and students to lobby Sacramento for increased as well as equitable funding for community colleges. In 2005, I was one of C.F.T.'s campaign coordinators working to defeat the Governor's statewide initiatives. I am also a member of the FACC PAC. I have been very active in community and political affairs. I have served on many boards in San Francisco: Coleman Advocates for Youth and Family, the Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center, the Fort Mason Foundation, the San Francisco Labor Council, to name a few. I am an elected member of the Democratic National Committee, and am also Northern Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party. I have been an active volunteer and party officeholder for the Democratic Party since 1984. I earned a B.A. in English Literature with a minor in French from the University of Hawaii, from which I graduated Phi Beta Kappa. I also hold an M.P.A. from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, and have completed all coursework in a master's degree program in Chinese Literature at Stanford University (thesis not completed). I hope to bring greater diversity to community college faculty. One of the major challenges facing community college faculty is the graying of the faculty in the next decade. We have a golden opportunity to develop a diverse and vibrant next generation of teachers. I look forward to working with FACC towards this goal. |
