Description: Several months ago, the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance approved Budget Bill Language directing a portion of the Basic Skills Initiative funds toward a study on improving community college student success in basic skills education. This proposal was made alongside of SB 1143 (Liu), legislation requiring a study on improving student success in community colleges. The Budget Bill Language was approved by the Joint Legislative Conference Committee and then pulled back for reconsideration. While it no longer threatens the Basic Skills Initiative funding, it would require a duplicate study, wasting precious resources that would otherwise be dedicated to other purposes. FACCC and other community college organizations are opposed to multiple studies on the same subject. The Chancellor's Office, moreover, simply lacks the resources to conduct duplicate studies. Faculty members are encouraged to advocate rejection of the Budget Bill Language study on student success. FACCC has posted another alert on SB 1143, seeking critical amendments to the legislation on student success.
