Featuring: Students “Araceli” and “Edgardo”; Stockton Mayor Ed Chavez; CCI Spokesman Roger Salazar;
Rough translation:
Anchor 1: “Community Colleges are an important part of education for Hispanic students.
Anchor 2: “And that is why an initiative is being prepared that would help thousands of students: Maribel Lopez has the details.”
Maribel Lopez (reporter) : “Thousands of students this week initiated a new school year. For students like Araceli and Edgardo, students at Delta College, worries are always present.
Araceli: “We have to pay rent; we have to pay electricity…etc., in all we have numerous expenditures”
Edgardo: “Going to school requires a lot of money. Money to spend on books, to spend in tuition….also if you don’t have a place to stay….nowadays you need a car.”
Maribel Lopez: That is why they decided to stay and listen to what politicians, community leaders and faculty members have to stay about the change that Community College Initiative would bring to the pockets of the students, if it is approved by voters”
Edgardo: “I was told that there was going to be a speech that was going to talk about reducing the prices of the units to $15, and I decided to stay around and listen.”
“I think it is good that they are doing this because there is a lot of people who can’t make it to college, I know a lot of my friends who could not be attending college because they think it is too costly.”
Maribel Lopez: “The Initiative, in addition to reducing the cost per unit, would also stabilize the millions of dollars that are assigned to the community colleges and will separate them from that of the public school system .”
Mayor Chavez: Those who have the opportunity to get an education, they get better work; better jobs that pay more; and all of that helps the community.”
Roger Salazar: “Sure there are some who prefer the state budget be left up to the Legislature, but we believe this is one of the most important responsibilities of the state, to educate our youth…”
Araceli: “There are things sometimes that happen that impedes with education, its very easy for students to say ‘that’s not for me’ and quit going to school.”
Anchor: “This initiative will go to the ballot the 5 th of February next year.”
