What is your campus doing to "go green" and what efforts
are you making personally and professionally to make a difference globally?

RESPONSES

In order to "go green," City College of San Francisco is developing a two-part Sustainability Plan, in draft form as of January, which is very comprehensive. Part 1 covers topics such as energy and transportation, that is, the physical environment and the construction and operations activities of the college. Part 2 has plans for "going green" in the classroom, the library, and in student services and co-curricular activities. Community partnerships, staff development, and social and economic sustainability are also covered. We include plans for preparing students to work in green industries, infusing sustainability into the rest of the curriculum, and increasing the environmental awareness of faculty, staff and students at home, at school and at work.

In professional terms, I'm involved in bringing together this history-making plan with input from colleagues and the community. In my personal life, I support various environmental organizations, including the California League of Conservation Voters, a group which produces a scorecard of legislators based on their environmental votes.

The following are some new things that I am doing to save energy.

1.I have put a washing line up in the garden to dry my washing - I so enjoy using it too.

2. I keep a shopping bag in my car to use on small shopping sessions instead of getting bags from the store.

3. I often take small items from the store without a bag.

Santa Monica College has a composting program where it composts from the cafeteria and has paper and can/aluminum recycling bins around campus.

San Diego Miramar College has gone to all types of recycling.

Personally, I buy organic products, recycle all I can & consolidate trips.

The CCCCD has just installed solar panels on all its campuses to generate "electricity".
They go online this month and will dedicated next week.   This is probably one of the most
progressive "green" things it has done in 30+ years.
These solar panels also serves to shade and protect cars from sun and rain.
