INCOMING AAUP PRESIDENT CARY NELSON TO KEYNOTE FACCC CONFERENCE

FACCC is pleased to announce that incoming AAUP President Cary Nelson will be the featured closing keynote speaker at the 2006 annual conference, October 12-14, at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles. Author of numerous essays, including “The War Against the Faculty,” Dr. Nelson will be speaking on the “State of Academia: Opportunities & Threats.”

SENATE RULES COMMITTEE REJECTS DAVID CRANE TO THE TRB BOARD

In a major victory for FACCC and other faculty organizations, the Senate Rules Committee, Wednesday, declined to recommend David Crane’s confirmation to the Senate floor for a seat on the CalSTRS Teachers’ Retirement Board (TRB). Citing a lack of commitment to the Defined Benefit program, Senate President pro Tem Don Perata (D – Oakland) agreed with FACCC and other faculty lobbyists that confirmation of David Crane was not in the best interests of CalSTRS.

BUDGET CONFERENCE COMMITTEE CONTINUES TO DELIBERATE CC FUNDING

The Joint Legislative Conference Committee is continuing its work of reconciling the Assembly and Senate versions of the State Budget. At stake for community colleges is how much money will be devoted to equalization, whether or not fees are reduced, and if part-time faculty office hours and health benefits will be funded out of ongoing or one-time sources. The Assembly has also approved $5 million for professional development, a program the Senate is not funding.

If you have not already done so, contact the Joint Legislative Budget Conference Committee to advocate the faculty priorities. This is an urgent matter, as the conferees are busily concluding their work. Click here for for details.

BRING FACCC TO YOUR CAMPUS WITH NEW HIRE ORIENTATIONS

New hire orientations present wonderful opportunities to discuss FACCC’s vital work, particularly the community college initiative and retirement concerns. If your campus is planning an orientation for new faculty, please contact FACCC Membership Director Stephanie Davi, at sdfaccc@aol.com, or (916) 447-8555, to arrange a FACCC visit.

Your help in bringing FACCC to campus is sincerely appreciated.
