The Shrinking California Community College Mission:          From Threats to Solutions

Virtual Event

Please join us for a lively panel and discussion about the threats and potential solutions to the shrinking mission of the California Community Colleges.

California Education Code states that the mission of the California Community Colleges includes the offering of transfer and career education instruction, remedial instruction, English as a second language, adult noncredit instruction, community service courses, and workforce training services. The California Master Plan for Higher Education states that the California Community Colleges were established to “admit any student capable of benefiting from instruction.”

Over the past two decades, policies driven by external advocacy organizations funded by philanthrocapitalist groups have intentionally been shrinking the mission of the California Community Colleges. As a result of these policies, student enrollment has been steadily declining since The Great Recession of 2008. Disinvesting from the largest and most diverse system of higher education in the nation is systemic racism and classism.

From their unique perspectives as faculty leaders, panelists will discuss solutions to the threats posed by the agendas of privatization, anti-labor, austerity, and disinvesting from the public good.

Panel

Wendy Brill-Wynkoop, President, FACCC
Dr. Roxana Marachi, Professor of Education, San José State University

Erin Steinberger, CPA, MBA, Accounting Faculty, Santa Monica College
